What Happens If You Let Your Rego Expire?

It's easy to let a renewal slip through the cracks, but driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal in every Australian state and territory. Whilst you won't lose licence demerit points, if you're caught by police, you can face on-the-spot fines that vary by state but can run into hundreds of dollars and in some cases your vehicle may be towed and held at your expense until the matter is resolved.

When Can You Renew — and How Far in Advance?

Most states allow you to renew your registration up to three months before the expiry date, so there's no need to wait until the last minute. Renewal notices are typically sent out around 6–8 weeks before your rego is due, either by post or email depending on your preferences with your state authority. If you haven't received a notice, don't assume your rego has been extended, check your expiry date online and renew proactively.

How you receive your notice depends on your state and whether you've set up a digital account:

What Is a Green Slip and Do You Need One to Renew?

In New South Wales, a green slip (also called a CTP or Compulsory Third Party insurance policy) is a legal requirement and must be purchased before you can renew your registration. It covers personal injury compensation for anyone hurt in an accident involving your vehicle, regardless of who is at fault.

Most other states and territories have CTP insurance built into the registration fee itself, so you don't need to arrange it separately. NSW is the main exception where you need to source your own green slip from an approved insurer before completing your renewal.

In NSW, your green slip must be current at the time of renewal, and most insurers allow you to purchase one up to three months in advance.

Do You Need a Pink Slip or Blue Slip Before You Can Renew?

Depending on where you live and your vehicle's age, you may need a roadworthiness inspection before you can renew your rego. The rules vary quite a bit by state:

NSW is the most well-known for this. Vehicles more than five years old require an annual e-Safety check (commonly still called a pink slip) before renewal. If your vehicle has been unregistered for more than 90 days, you'll need a blue slip instead, which is a more thorough inspection for vehicles re-entering the registration system.

The NT also requires roadworthy inspections — at five years, ten years, and then annually after that.

In VIC, QLD, WA, SA, and TAS, there's no mandatory annual inspection just for renewal. However, an inspection is typically required when selling a vehicle, transferring registration from interstate, or re-registering a vehicle that's been off the road for an extended period.

If you're in NSW or the NT, allow at least two to three weeks before your expiry to get your inspection done, more if your vehicle is older or due for repairs. Not every mechanic is authorised to carry out these inspections — check your state authority's website to find an approved inspection station near you.
