17 Essential Items to Always Keep in Your Car

The road can sometimes be unpredictable, especially on long journeys. You never know when an emergency will strike, which is why it's essential to remain prepared for every circumstance. This article lists 17 essential items that you must always keep in your car to overcome any emergency that you might face on the road.

1. Spare Wheel Kit

The spare wheel kit is your safety net against unpredictable road conditions. When you are on a road trip, you never know when you’ll have to deal with a punctured tyre. Moreover, you could be in serious trouble if there is no tyre repair shop nearby.

Fortunately, with a spare wheel kit, you don’t have to worry about delays and can continue your journey with peace of mind. With the spare wheel kit, you can also save money by avoiding the expense of roadside recovery services.

2. Tyre Sealant or Repair Plugs

Tyre sealants and repair plugs must be in your car for optimal safety and convenience. They are temporary solutions for tyre punctures. Having a tyre sealant or repair plug is essential because it protects you from being stuck in a remote location due to a tyre puncture. It helps you fix the tyre on the spot and safely reach a garage. Since these are temporary solutions, it is vital to find a repair service as soon as possible.

3. Motor Oil (Top-up Bottle)

A bottle of motor oil is another essential item to keep in your vehicle at all times. Motor oil is vital for lubricating, cooling, and maintaining the engine's smooth operation.

Regular motor oil top-ups are an essential part of vehicle maintenance. Failing to perform these top-ups can lead to excessive wear and tear, as well as engine overheating. Hence, a top-up engine oil bottle is vital for emergencies, especially when travelling to remote locations. With a top-up bottle, you don't have to worry about low motor oil levels or engine overheating.

4. Warning Triangle

Warning triangles are installed behind cars when they are facing an emergency. They are essential to road safety and signal to other drivers that the vehicle is in an emergency. Installing a warning triangle is crucial when the car stops in the middle of the road.

Moreover, if your car breaks down or stops on the road, you must install a warning sign behind your vehicle to alert other drivers to your situation. Taking this precaution will help other drivers take necessary measures, reduce their speed, and maintain a safe distance from your car, thereby preventing collisions.

5. First-Aid Kit

Long road trips can be unpredictable, and you never know when you may need immediate medical care. Therefore, it is essential to have a first-aid kit in your vehicle. So, what should you include in your first-aid kit?

Band-aids and bandages for cuts and wounds.

Hand sanitiser to disinfect your hands.

A pair of scissors.

Pain relief medicines and sprays.

A thermometer.

An antiseptic cream and cleanser.

Over-the-counter medicines for general allergies, cough, and cold.

Antibiotic ointment.

Remember that the first-aid kit is for immediate care and to prevent a situation from worsening. Therefore, if you find yourself in such a situation, you should seek medical help as soon as possible.

6. Phone Charger

Having a phone charger in your vehicle is a good idea. On a long road journey, your phone is your lifeline. You need your phone for navigation, communication, and entertainment. Keeping a phone charger in your vehicle ensures that your device is always fully charged and ready to use.

Now, when you choose a phone charger for your car, always ensure that your car’s battery is in good condition. Continuously charging your phone in the vehicle may drain the battery. Moreover, choose a charger that is safe for your car. You don’t want your phone to overheat during charging or your car battery to go dead in the middle of a long journey.

7. Backup/Spare Phone

Although this is entirely optional, a backup phone in your car can prevent many inconveniences. A backup phone means unlimited entertainment without worrying about the battery completely draining. Moreover, you can also download maps on your phone for navigation, particularly if you are travelling to an area with a poor internet connection. Another advantage of having a backup phone is that you don’t have to worry about charging your primary phone, which safeguards the health of your car’s battery.

8. Raincoat

The next essential thing to keep in your car is a raincoat. A raincoat keeps you dry and provides better mobility than an umbrella.

Suppose it is raining and you must step out of your car unexpectedly to fix a flat tyre or refuel. Unlike an umbrella, a raincoat allows unrestricted use of both hands and offers better protection from wind and heavy downpour. It ensures that you stay dry and avoid catching a cold.

9. Warm Jacket

If you live in a colder region, having a warm jacket in your vehicle is a must. Also, even if you don’t live in a cold area, keeping it in your car is advisable if you are going on a long road trip.

When travelling to a new place, it is difficult to predict the weather conditions. Although you may be expecting warm, pleasant weather, it may suddenly become cold and windy. Hence, keeping a warm jacket with you will protect you against various weather conditions.

10. Torch (With Extra Batteries)

A torch and extra batteries are a must-have. Imagine a situation where you have a flat tyre at night and have to get out of your car to fix it. In such a situation, a torch provides you with visibility. Now, consider another example: suppose you hear an unusual sound coming from under the hood of your car and need to inspect it. A torch is essential in this situation.

Now you may say that your phone’s flashlight can also do the job. Yes, it can. But you never know when it will run out of battery. Moreover, in emergencies, it is essential to keep your phone’s battery fully charged for functions such as making calls or accessing maps. Hence, maintaining a torch in your vehicle is necessary.

11. A Couple of Carpet Squares (for traction on mud or snow)

It can be optional depending on where you live, but keeping a few carpet squares is a good idea if you have space in your vehicle. If you live in a region that experiences heavy snowfall or rainfall, which can cause the roads to become muddy and slippery, this accessory is an absolute must-have.

Carpet squares provide much-needed traction against these extreme road conditions. These rubber mats give the wheels the grip they need to move forward. They can dig into the loose surface and provide the vehicle with mobility against mud and snow.

Having carpet squares handy means you are better prepared to handle emergencies on the road. However, the importance of these factors again depends on where you are driving your vehicle.

12. Seatbelt Cutter/Window Breaker Tool

When you are on the road, an emergency may strike at any time. Therefore, if you don’t already have a seatbelt cutter and a window breaker tool in your vehicle, you should obtain these tools as soon as possible. A seatbelt cutter and a window breaker are usually in a dual-purpose tool. Emergency preparedness has never been more relevant in this world. Here is a simple example of the importance of a seatbelt cutter and a window breaker tool.

Suppose your city faced flash floods due to its poor drainage system. In such a condition, if your vehicle submerges under the water, you will need a window breaker tool to escape. These situations often require you to make a rational decision. Hence, if you need to break the window or cut the seat belt, having a tool will make it easier and quicker.

13. Jumper Leads

Jumper leads can restart a car with a dead battery, which is why they are one of the most important things to keep in your vehicle. So, how do you use jumper leads? First, you will need a car with a functioning battery. Then, park the working car near the vehicle with the dead battery.

Turn off the engines of both cars. Attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery and the other one to an unpainted metal surface of your car. Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Now start the car with a dead battery and let both vehicles run for a few minutes to build a charge.

14. Map Book or Road Atlas

Most of us use our phones for navigation. But a fully charged phone may not be enough if you are going on a long journey. Moreover, if you forget to download an offline map, navigating areas with poor internet connectivity can become tricky and confusing. Having a map book or a road atlas in your car is always a good idea.

15. Basic Tool Kit

A basic tool kit helps you handle various challenges on the road. Your toolkit must include a socket set, pliers and wire cutters, a wrench set, a screwdriver set, zip ties, a tyre pressure gauge, duct tape, a pair of latex gloves, and lubricant. Keeping these tools readily available in your vehicle will help you handle minor breakdowns on your own.

16. Emergency Rations (non-perishable snacks & water)

Keeping some non-perishable snacks and water in your car will make a huge difference when you are on the road. If you are facing an unexpected delay, a car breakdown, or severe weather conditions, these food items can turn out to be life-saving.

17. Small Storage Crate to Keep Items Organised

You should have a small crate to keep all your items organised and make sure you can find them easily when you need them. In an emergency, you don’t want to waste time searching for a tool or your raincoat. So, having a storage crate makes it easy to keep your essentials organised, and you don’t have to spend time looking for them during an emergency.

Prepare Beyond Just Gear With Right2Drive

Life’s uncertainty requires us to be well-prepared at all times, and this couldn’t be any truer for those on the road.
