Roadworthy vs Unroadworthy vs Undriveable: What's the Difference? 

If your cars ever failed an inspection or been checked over by police, you've probably heard the terms "unroadworthy" and "undriveable" thrown around like they mean the same thing. They don't and knowing the difference can save you from a fine, a defect notice, or a nasty surprise with your insurance. Here's what's actually going on.&nbsp;<h2>What does "roadworthy" mean?&nbsp;</h2>A roadworthy vehicle is one that meets the minimum legal safety standard to be on the road. These generally fall into two categories, though naming conventions vary slightly by state:&nbsp;<ul><li>Minor defect: things like a blown globe, worn wiper blades or a small crack outside your line of sight. You'll usually get a set period (commonly 14 to 28 days depending on the state) to fix it and won't be fined, provided it's rectified and inspected in time.&nbsp;</li><li>Major defect: more serious issues like brake failure, a cracked windscreen obstructing your view, or bald tyres. Your car may be issued a red defect sticker, meaning it can't be driven again (except to a repairer, in some cases) until it's fixed and re-inspected by an authorised examiner.
